- Shigeki Morimoto said in an interview for the Nintendo DREAM Nov 2009 event that Lugia was made a Psychic type instead of a H2o blazon considering they wanted to give information technology a stronger impression.
- Despite not beingness aWater type, Lugia has occasionally been depicted as aWater-type in theTrading Carte du jour Game.
- In Gold and Silver, Lugia, like Ho-Oh, has the aforementioned encounter music every bit normalwild Pokémon. The same was true for theLegendary beasts before they received unique meet music inCrystal. However, Lugia and Ho-Oh got their own unique battle themes inHeartGold and SoulSilver.
- Lugia is tied with Ho-Oh for thehighest baseSpecial Defense stat of allFlying-type Pokémon.
- Lugia'southGeneration IV,Five, andSix Pokédex entries that mention it being able to crusade a 40-day tempest may be a biblical reference toNoah'southward Ark.
- When Lugia's Shiny grade is shown inPokémon Stadium 2, it is greenish rather than pinkish.
Origin
Lugia's aquatic tendencies could relate it toplesiosaurs. Information technology is also possible that Lugia may be based on Ryūjin , a dragon who lived on the ocean floor and was theShinto simulated character of the bounding main. The two have similarities in false history, and Lugia'sShiny colors (ruddy and white) are the same colors as the coral Ryujin's palace was made of. In improver, it is worth noting thatdragon (yang, male) andChinese phoenix (yin, female) duality is prevalent in Eastern fake history, and Ho-Oh is the Japanese proper name of the Fenghuang (Chinese phoenix). In keeping with this, Lugia resembles awyvern, a variety of dragons with a single set of forelimbs that serve as wings. Lugia may also exist an embodiment of storms. Lugia'due south avian body, coloration, and face up-markings suggest that it may be somewhat based on thegray heron. Thebeluga whale, a white whale with similar body shape and coloration to Lugia, may also exist a basis for Lugia's design and proper name. Lugia's back fins and tail spikes are reminiscent of the Stegosaurus . Lugia might besides be based onBahamut (giant fish), and Bahamut is often existence portrayed as a dragon-like brute in modern fantasy, hence Lugia'due south fish-like and dragon-like advent.
Name origin
Lugia may be derived from lutetium (a silvery element), which in turn is named afterLutetia (the Roman proper name forParis, the city of low-cal). It may also involveLugeo (Latin forto lie dormant, alluding to the way Lugia lies at the lesser of the ocean),luna (Latin formoon),beluga whale, anddeluge. It may also be derived fromBahamut (giant fish) earliest nickname, Balhūt (Bahamut) is a variant proper name plant in some cosmographies. In the earliest sources, the name is Lutīyā.
